Homemade Pico de Gallo is a breeze to make. It is healthy, simple, fresh and absolutely delicious. Pico de Gallo makes the perfect dip for tortilla chips and crackers, and one of the best toppers for tacos, nachos, burrito bowls, or whatever your taste buds desire. This versatile dish is very popular in Mexican cuisine, it is also known as Salsa Fresca.
The key to a flavorful Pico de Gallo resides in the freshness and quality of your ingredients. What you will need are: tomatoes, onions, cilantro, lime, jalapeno peppers, and seasonings. These ingredients are guaranteed to yield a saporous dish.
Here are some tips…
For the tomatoes: ripe tomatoes are key ingredients; their skin should be glossy and have a deep-red color. For this recipe, I used Campari tomatoes. They are my favorite kind of tomatoes. They are very juicy, and they have a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. Roma tomatoes are also a great choice for Pico de Gallo. To prepare the tomatoes for this recipe, cut them down the center into two halves, remove the tomatoes’ seeds by scooping them out or by giving the tomatoes halves a gentle squeeze. After, finely dice your them.
For the onions: dice your onions finely. You can use either white or red onions.
For the cilantros: chop your cilantros, it is optional to leave out the stems. You can also substitute cilantro for parsley if you prefer its taste better.
For the jalapenos: You can use either use serrano or jalapeño peppers. Remove the stem end, cut the pepper lengthwise in half, and remove the seeds and membrane. Then, finely dice the peppers.
